COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sarah Kaufman survived a game and unusually aggressive Alexis Davis on Saturday to make her case for another chance at a Strikeforce belt.
Kaufman won a majority decision in the main event of Strikeforce's preliminary card in Columbus, Ohio. Two judges scored the fight 29-28 for Kaufman; one scored it a 29-29 draw.
USA TODAY scored the fight as a 28-28 draw, with Kaufman winning the first two rounds and Davis dominating the final round 10-8.
Rounds one and two saw Davis willing to trade punches in her attempts to clinch or reach for collar tie-ups. Kaufman generally scored at range with jabs and crosses, but Davis landed short right hands and knees in the clinch. Compustrike saw Kaufman outlanding Davis 148 to 98 through the first 10 minutes.
Davis scored her only takedown of the fight in the third round, but it was all she needed to control most of the stanza. She maintained top position for long stretches, threatened with a chicken wing when she was on the bottom briefly and never let Kaufman get back to her feet.
The first champion of Strikeforce's female bantamweight division, Kaufman earned a title shot against the winner of the Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey bout scheduled for later Saturday night.
Other results from the preliminary card:
Roger Bowling def. Brandon Saling via 2nd-round technical knockout
Pat "Bam Bam" Healy def. Caros "The Future" Fodor via 3rd-round head-and-arm choke
Ryan Couture def. Conor Heun via 3rd-round technical knockout
