Montréal native Valérie “Trouble” Létourneau looks to pick up one of her biggest wins to date at Freedom Fight: “Caged Combat” on October 27th in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The talented striker is set to battle Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt Vanessa Mariscal in a featured bout on the main card.
Freedom Fight officials confirmed plans for the fight today. Létourneau has won three of her past four fights, but she is coming off of a narrow Split Decision loss to unbeaten prospect Claudia Gadelha in April. Mariscal also looks to get back on track after suffering her first defeat at Invicta FC 1.
Létourneau (4-3-0) returned from a two-year hiatus in April 2011 and earned an impressive second-round stoppage win over Julie “Badchild” Malenfant under the Ringside MMA banner in Montréal. The standout kickboxer went on to make her Freedom Fight debut five months later and needed just over two minutes to finish Tannaya Hantelman with a barrage of punches. Létourneau was then booked to face Mariscal for Freedom Fight in April, but the event was cancelled and Létourneau was instead matched up against Gadelha at Wreck MMA: “Road To Glory.” Despite a strong third round from Létourneau, it was not quite enough to steal the fight on the scorecards and Gadelha was awarded a close decision win. Létourneau remains one of Canada’s top female fighters and she looks to hand Mariscal her second straight loss.
Mariscal (2-1-0) gives up an experience edge to Létourneau, but the California native is one of the more skilled ground fighters in the women’s bantamweight division. Mariscal scored submission wins in her first two fights, including a third-round triumph over Strikeforce veteran Colleen “The Beautiful Disaster” Schneider in June 2011. When her bout with Létourneau was cancelled in April, Mariscal stepped in to face Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio at Invicta FC 1. Mariscal was seen as a favourite by some due to her strong jiu-jitsu pedigree, but D’Alelio dominated the fight throughout and eventually forced Mariscal to submit to punches in round two. Mariscal now aims to prove that she is still a prospect to watch for at 135 pounds with a victory over Létourneau in October.
Freedom Fight: “Caged Combat” takes place on October 27th at the Sudbury Community Arena in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
