XFC 16: "High Stakes" Live Play-By-Play & Results
Xtreme Fighting Championships came to the Knoxville Civic Auditorium-Coliseum in Knoxville, Tennessee tonight for XFC 16: “High Stakes.” The HDNet-televised event was headlined by a lightweight battle between UFC veterans Jamie “C-4” Varner and Drew “Night Rider” Fickett.
Also on the card, XFC mainstay Carlos Mikey Gomez faced Josh Samman in the middleweight co-feature. Rising female stars Marianna “The Crushen Russian” Kheyfets and Heather “Hurricane” Clark faced off in a 125-pound women’s bout. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for tonight’s card.

Jamie “C-4” Varner vs Drew “Night Rider” Fickett

Round 1:
Varner dropped Fickett with a big right hook very early in the fight and followed with punches on the ground as Fickett covered up. Varner continued to land punches until Fickett rolled to his stomach and tapped out.
Winner: Jamie Varner by Submission (Punches) at 0:40 of round one. He improves to 19-6-1, 2 NC.

Josh Samman vs Carlos Mikey Gomez

Round 1:
Gomez immediately backed Samman up to the cage and dropped down to escape a guillotine choke. Samman sprawled out and wound up on top. He landed punches and defended against more of Gomez’s takedown attempts. Samman landed elbows and wound up in half-guard after a scramble. Gomez looked to counter with a leglock, but gave up his back. Samman flattened him out and rained down punches and forearm strikes. He continued to punch away until the bout was stopped as Gomez tapped out.
Winner: Josh Samman by Submission (Punches) at 3:37 of round one. He improves to 9-2-0.

Marianna “The Crushen Russian” Kheyfets vs Heather “Hurricane” Clark

Round 1:
Clark landed a pair of leg kicks and a knee to open the fight, but Kheyfets clinched and backed Clark up to the fence. Clark landed a knee and circled out. A right cross scored for Clark and she followed with another one. Clark continued to counter Kheyfets’s punches with quick right hands. Kheyfets changed strategies and landed kicks to the body. A head kick from Kheyfets was countered by a right cross from Clark.
Clark missed with a head kick and Kheyfets landed a kick-punch combo. Clark connected with a right hand and clinched. She punched free and backed up. Kheyfets attempted a head kick and Clark blocked it. A lunging one-two from Kheyfets came up short and Clark countered with another right hand. Kheyfets rushed in with a flurry and both fighters landed kicks. Clark’s right cross continued to score and she tripped Kheyfets to the mat. She punched to the body until the bell. 10-9 Clark.
Between rounds, the bout was waved off due to Clark’s badly swollen right eye, though it was not immediately clear what had caused the damage. Kheyfets takes the victory and remains perfect.
Winner: Marianna Kheyfets by TKO (Doctor Stoppage) at 5:00 of round one. She improves to 5-0-0.

Chris Wright vs Len Cook

Round 1:
Cook landed a leg kick and a right cross early on and the fighters clinched. Wright tried for a body-lock takedown, but Cook defended and stayed on his feet. Wright managed to get Cook down to the mat and he scored with punches from Cook’s guard. He landed more punches that caused a large hematoma to form on Cook’s forehead. Wright stood and landed more punches as the round came to a close. 10-9 Wright.
Round 2:
Wright clinched again in round two and backed Cook him to the cage. He tripped him to the ground, but Cookco untered with a heel hook attempt. Wright scrambled free and wound up in Cook’s guard. He landed short strikes from the top and avoided a triangle choke attempt. A series of powerful right hands connected for Wright as he targeted the hematoma on Cook’s head. More punches scored for Wright in the final minute. The fighters weres tood up with ten seconds remaining and neither landed anything. 10-9 Wright.
Round 3:
Cook missed with a spinning wheel kick to open the final round, but landed a one-two. Time was called after Wright was kicked in the groin. Action resumed and Wright stuffed a takedown. Cook pulled guard and tried to set up a triangle choke. Wright easily avoided it and landed punches. Wright stood and Cook followed. The fighters clinched and exchanged knees to the body. A battle for position followed and both fighters landed more knees. 10-10.
Winner: Chris Wright by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 6-1-1.

Chase Gormley vs Brandon Sayles

Round 1:
Gormley took Sayles down in the opening 30 seconds and moved to mount. Sayles gave up his back and tried to scramble to his feet, but Gormley kept him down and moved to side control. He punched to the body and looked to set up a keylock on Sayles’s left arm. The crowd booed the lack of action as Gormley threw occasional knees to the body. Sayles secured an inverted triangle choke from the bottom and stood up seconds later. A looping overhand right scored for Gormley and he landed another one just before the bell. 10-9 Gormley.
Round 2:
Gormley began the second round with kicks and looked for a takedown, but Sayles stuffed it. The fighters jabbed and Gormley landed a one-two. He resumed kicking to the leg and body of Sayles and landed an overhand right. Neither fighter seemed willing to commit to much of any offence aside from occasional jabs. Sayles finally landed a combination and followed with more punches as Gormley backed up. Punches were exchanged and both landed. Sayles landed a one-two and Gormley answered with one of his own. Sayles stayed active with knees and punches late in the round. 10-9 Sayles due to the late rally.
Round 3:
Sayles landed punches early in the final round and fought off a clinch attempt. An uppercut scored for Sayles, but Gormley answered with a one-two and a right hook. He took Sayles down and fought off a Kimura attempt. Gormley punched to the head and body from half-guard and looked to move to mount. He postured up and scored with a series of hammerfists. Gormley prevented Sayles from standing up and continued to land punches from the top until the final bell sounded to end the lacklustre fight. 10-9 Gormley.
Winner: Chase Gormley by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 8-4-0, 1 NC.

Amaechi “The Infamous A.O.” Oselukwue vs Gerardo Julio Gallegos

Round 1:
Gallegos opened the fight with a right hook that backed Oselukwue up. Gallegos scored a takedown, but Oselukwue stood and landed knees. He missed with a leg kick, but spun around in a 360 and landed a spinning right hook that floored Gallegos. Oselukwue landed one more punch for good measure.
Winner: Amaechi Oselukwue by KO (Punch) at 1:23 of round one. He improves to 3-5-0.

Dustin “D-West” West vs Stoney “Skuller” Hale

Round 1:
Hale clinched and backed West up to the cage early on. He broke away with a standing elbow. West hurt Hale with a head kick and absolutely teed off with big punches and knees. Hale somehow stayed on his feet, but West continued to blast him with strikes. A left hook finally dropped Hale and West flurried on the ground for the stoppage.
Winner: Dustin West by TKO (Punches) at 1:23 of round one. He improves to 6-4-0.
